David Warren Swanson Sr.

David Warren Swanson Sr., 89, of Sweetwood Continuing Care Community, formerly of Stoney Ledge Road, died yesterday at home.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on July 31, 1917, son of Robert W. and Ruby Jones Swanson, he graduated from Poly Prep High School there and, in 1939, from Williams College.

Mr. Swanson owned and operated James W. Elwell Shipping Co. in New York City. After selling his family shipping business, he retired to Williamstown.

He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Taconic Golf Club and the Williams College Faculty House.

His first wife, the former Mary Flanagan, is deceased.

His wife, the former Jane "Tracey" MacGruer, whom he married in 1992, died in 2004.

Mr. Swanson leaves two daughters, Judith Redway of Marion and Janet Stewart of Boston; a son, David W. Swanson Jr. of Point Pleasant, N.J.; three stepsons, John MacGruer of Great Barrington, Frank MacGruer of Austerlitz, N.Y., and Andrew MacGruer of Bayfield, Colo.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service to celebrate the life of David Warren Swanson, who died Monday, April 23, 2007, will take place at a later date at St. John's Episcopal Church in Williamstown. Burial will take place in the family plot in Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Memorial donations are suggested for St. John's Episcopal Church or to Williams College through FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPEL, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Mr. Swanson was a patron of the Sterling & Francine Clark Art Institute.

He was predeceased by a sister, Janet Fuller.
