I just tonight (22 March 2013) discovered this obituary for the brilliant and thoughtful Robert Mittenbuhler. He first wrote to me when I was working at WGBH radio in 1993 and sent me a book by Donald Francis Tovey as a gift. Thereafter, we had numerous exchanges by mail (he often sent me postcards from his travels in Europe), and I even had the pleasure of meeting him once or twice, when he came to my home near Boston and joined me for dinner at a local restaurant.
I'm saddened to learn of his passing and regret that I was unaware of it for nearly six years. I still have all his notes and will cherish them always as a memento of a fine mind and kindred spirit.
