Mary Gurley

July 17, 2007

Mary Gurley, 74, of Sweetwood, Cold Spring Road, formerly of Park Street, died Tuesday at home.

Born in Chicago on Jan. 18, 1933, daughter of George R. and Charlotte Case Joslyn, she moved to Williamstown when she was 13 with her mother and siblings and graduated from Emma Willard School. She received a bachelor's from Mills College and, in 1957, received her master's in education from Harvard University.

After moving to Greenwich, Conn., she taught at Whitby Montessori School. In 1975, she moved to Williamstown, where she pursued her interest in the arts and sustainable green lifestyles, particularly wind-generated electricity.

She leaves two sons, David E. Gurley of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Dr. Richard H. Gurley III of Davis, Calif.; a daughter, Chandra Gurley McKee of Reading; a sister, Joy MacNulty of Williamstown; a brother, Ted Joslyn of Grand Junction, Colo.; two grandsons; and a former husband, Richard H. Gurley Jr.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Mary Joslyn Gurley, who died Tuesday, July 17, 2007, will be at a later date. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church, VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire, the American Cancer Society or to Children's Hospital of Boston, Pediatric Cancer Research, in care of FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA FUNERAL HOME, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements.

Mary's grandson Ryan McKee is currently cycling cross-country to raise awareness and funding for pediatric cancer research. Mary will forever be held dearly in the hearts of her family and friends. Hunter, Mary's best friend and companion, will be moving to Reading to live with Mary's daughter, Chandra, and her family. She also leaves another grandson, Lucas Gurley. A brother, Jon Joslyn, is deceased. Mary established herself as a regional philanthropist.
