Clifford Billings Granger

Clifford Billings Granger, 68, died Friday at Balsam Mountain Preserve in Sylva, N.C.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Dec. 18, 1938, son of the late Fitzhugh and Eleanor Billings Granger, he attended schools in Chicago and graduated from New Trier High School in Winnetka, Ill. He was also a 1961 graduate of Williams College, where he received a degree in chemistry and mathematics.

He moved to Williamstown in 2001.

Mr. Granger was first employed by CPC International Corp., working throughout Europe, Africa and Southeast Asia, until being named president of its Southeast Asia Far East Division. He later was chairman of the Louis T. Leonowens Trading Co. in Thailand for six years. He was last employed as a managing director of F.H. Faulding & Co. Ltd. in Southeast Asia and China, until his retirement in 2000.

He was a member of Taconic Golf Club and of the Williams College Faculty Club. He enjoyed painting and playing golf.

He and his wife, the former Ginny Salt, were married Aug. 27, 1986, in Durban, South Africa.

Besides his wife, he leaves four daughters, Samantha Bergeron and Jennifer Granger, both of New Rhodes, La., and Sharon Edwards and Renée Granger, both of Baton Rouge, La.; a son, Price Granger of Fort Worth, Texas; a stepson, David Bailes of Johannesburg, South Africa; two stepdaughters, Sara-Jane Aw of Singapore and Lucy Overtveld of London; a brother, Gordon Granger of Spring Island, S.C.; a sister, Charlotte Taber of Tucson, Ariz.; and 12 grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service to celebrate the life of Clifford Granger, who died Friday, Aug. 24, 2007, will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Williams College Faculty Club in Williamstown. Burial will be private.
