Raymond James Degere

Raymond James Degere, 77, of 69 Champagne Ave., died Monday at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington, Vt.

Born in Adams on March 15, 1930, son of Alfred and Yvonne Johnson Degere, he graduated from the former Adams High School in 1948, where he was president of his class. He also attended Harvard University in Cambridge.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, where he served with the Army Signal Corp as a corporal. Following his military career, he graduated from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.

Mr. Degere was employed by General Electric Naval Ordnance Systems. Before that, he was employed by Milton Bradley and later as the manager of the computer center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. At one time, he was employed as a computer analyst and programmer by General Electric Co.

He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church.

His wife, the former Lois A. Kelly, whom he married June 12, 1954 at St. Thomas' Church in Adams, died May 9, 2002.

He leaves two daughters, Cheryl Chalk of Guilderland, N.Y., and Suzanne Lenhoff of Williamstown; three sons, Peter A. Degere of West Islip, N.Y., Mitchell J. Degere of Adams and Paul D. Degere of Alexandria, Va.; two sisters, Helen Milne of Lexington, Shirley Remillard of North Adams; two brothers, Richard Degere of Brighton and Robert Degere of Adams; 11 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Raymond James Degere will be conducted Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church of Williamstown. Burial with military honors will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery, Williamstown.

Calling hours are Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPELS, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Memorial donations are suggested for the Williamstown Youth Center through the funeral home.

Mr. Degere also leaves his grandchildren, Melody and Brandon Chalk, James and Andrew Lenhoff, Julie, Peter, Daniel, Joseph, Jordan, and Meghan and Raymond Degere; a great-grandchild, Maya Lois Chalk. He was predeceased by a brother, Francis Degere.
