William Glover Seeley

William Glover Seeley, 74, of 91 Summer St., died Saturday at North Adams Regional Hospital.

Born in Hartford, Conn., on Sept. 29, 1932, son of Walter and Helen Glover Seeley, he attended schools in Springfield and Natick, graduating in 1950 from Natick High School, where his team won a state foorball championship.

In 1958, he earned a degree in electrical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he played varsity hockey. In the 1960s, he received a master's degree in physics from Williams College in conjunction with Sprague Electric Co., where he then worked. In 1972, he earned his doctorate in theoretical physics from State University of New York at Albany.

A Navy veteran of the Korean War, he served aboard the destroyer escort USS Howard D. Crow.

Mr. Seeley was employed for 40 years as a professor of math and physics at North Adams State College and at its successor, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, where he founded the physics department in 1968. He retired in 2006. He was the author of several technical papers and held five U.S. patents, all related to his work in electronics and condensed matter physics, fields in which he also worked as a consultant to various corporate and government agencies. Before his academic career, he worked in the special products division of Sprague Electric Co., leaving his position as chief engineer in 1966. After retiring from teaching, he remained with MCLA to direct its Center for Robotic Arts.

He was a member of First Congregational Church of Williamstown.

He played ice hockey all of his life and became an active snowboarder at age 65 and a BMX racer at age 66, competing in BMX on the national level in the National Bicycle League. He was ranked seventh in the nation while racing at the age of 69 in the 55-and-older age group.

He and his wife, the former Alicia Jean Costa, were married Jan. 31, 1958, in Cambridge.

Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Wesley and David Seeley, both of Williamstown, and Jeffrey Seeley of Springfield; a brother, Robert Seeley of Mystic, Conn.; and a grandson.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral to celebrate the life of Bill Seeley, who died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007, will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. at First Congregational Church of Williamstown by the Rev. Carrie Bail, pastor.

Burial will be private. Calling hours will be Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapel, 521 W. Main St., North Adams. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in care of the funeral home.

He also leaves a grandson, Jacob Seeley of Williamstown; a cousin, Norman "Bud" Knight of Cohasset; and many nieces and nephews.
