George R. Olds

George R. Olds, 81, of 70 Champagne Ave. died Wednesday at North Adams Regional Hospital.

He was the Middlefield fire chief from 1972 to 1987.

Born in Westfield on July 23, 1926, son of George W. and Grace Cook Olds, he attended schools in Middlefield and graduated from the former Chester High School.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served as a technical sergeant in India.

Following his military career, Mr. Olds returned to Middlefield to operate the family-owned Fairway Farm dairy business. He retired from Beloit-Jones Co. in Dalton with 15 years of service.

He had been a member of the Middlefield Volunteer Fire Department since the age of 15. He also was a member of the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Department and the Berkshire County Fire Chief Association, a past president of the Massachusetts Jersey Cattle Club and a former member of the Dalton American Legion.

His first wife, the former Dulcie Tapsall, died July 22, 1986.

He leaves his former wife, Marlene DuBois Olds of North Adams; a daughter, Catherine Radwich of Middlefield; three sisters, Shirley Van Parys of Woodbridge, Va., Marie Clark of Concord, N.H., and Nancy Olds of Fort Myers, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Tina DiSanti of Adams and Linda Mariani of Manchester, N.H.; two stepsons, Bruce Mariani of Bennington, Vt., and Ronald Mariani of Williamstown; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and four stepgrandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Private services for former Middlefield Fire Chief George R. Olds, who died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2007, will be conducted at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPEL, 521 West Main St. North Adams, by the Rev. Roy Burdick, pastor of Florida Baptist Church.

There will be no calling hours. Burial will take place at a later date in Pine Grove Cemetery in Middlefield. Memorial donations are suggested for the Middlefield Volunteer Fire Department through the funeral home.

Mr. Olds also leaves two grandsons, Robert and Matthew Radwich; two great-grandchildren, Dane and Skyler Radwich; and four stepgrandchildren, Paul and Richard Lemieux, and Joel and Curtis Mariani. He was predeceased by sister, Hazel Hall.
