Janice Shotwell

Janice Shotwell, 58, of 772 North Hoosac Road, died at Sweet Brook Continuing Care Center on Monday following a long battle with cancer.

She moved to Williamstown in 1994 after living in Maryland, South Carolina, Maine, Illinois and Dalton.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Nov. 8, 1948, daughter of Henry F. and Anna Knickerbocker Bolte, she graduated from Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pa., and earned her master of library science degree from the University of North Carolina. She received a certificate with honors in litigation from Roosevelt University in Chicago, and later earned a master's degree in education from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.

Mrs. Shotwell was employed as the head law librarian at Berkshire County Law Library in Pittsfield for many years. In 2003, she began teaching English at Herberg Middle School, retiring in January 2007.

She was a longtime member of St. John's Episcopal Church, where she served as a teacher in the Sunday School and as junior warden, among many other official and unofficial roles.

She was a member of the board of the Berkshire Food project and an advocate for prisoner rights. She enjoyed reading, writing and traveling and was a fan of University of North Carolina basketball.

Mrs. Shotwell leaves her husband, Richard Shotwell, whom she married on May 23, 1975, in Towson, Md.

Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Andrew Shotwell of Williamstown; a sister, Jean Bolte of Hillsborough, N.C.; and a brother, Richard Bolte of Hartland, Wis.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Janice Shotwell, who died Monday, Sept. 17, 2007, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29 at St. John's Episcopal Church, 35 Park St. in Williamstown by the Rev. Peter T. Elvin, rector. A reception at the church will follow the service. Interment at Westlawn Cemetery will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Herberg Middle School Library Fund or to the Mission Trip Fund at St. John's Church, care of FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247. She also leaves a niece, Jennifer Bolte of Royal Oaks, Mich., and a nephew, Brian Bolte of Palmyra, Wis.

She enjoyed rooting for the Tarheels in the intense UNC-Duke rivalry over the years. Jan and her family enjoyed touring the New England countryside, the American Southwest, Colorado, and California. She was noted for her clear perception and honesty. She loved her family and she particularly enjoyed baking for them and for her friends.
