Frances E. Green

Frances E. Green, 93, formerly of 118 Church St., died Dec. 5 at Sweet Brook Care Centers, where she had resided since 2005.

Born in North Adams on Aug. 5, 1914, daughter of John F. and Helen Judge Walshe, she was a 1932 graduate of Drury High School and graduated from the former North Adams State Teachers College, now Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.

Mrs. Green was employed by the former Boston Store in North Adams as a buyer until her marriage in 1941. Later, she was a volunteer librarian and teacher's assistant at the former St. Joseph's High School.

She and her husband, Earl L. Green, traveled to Ireland, England and France after his retirement, retracing his World War II service in the Army.

In 1978, they moved to Melbourne Beach, Fla., where she was a founding member of Immaculate Conception Church. In 1987, they relocated to Reston, Va., to be near family before returning to Northern Berkshire in 1999.

She was a communicant of St. Francis' Church, where she was a member of the Rosary Sodality and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

Mrs. Green was an accomplished pianist and enjoyed reading and hostessing her book club and discussion group.

She was married Oct. 20, 1941, at St. Francis' Church.

Besides her husband, she leaves a daughter, Mary E. Garofano of Pittsfield; four sons, James F. Green of McLean, Va., Gerard "Chuck" Green of Fort Pierce, Fla., Kevin P. Green of Boyce, Va., and Shaun M. Green of Dunstable; and five grandchildren.

Three children died in infancy.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Calling hours for Frances E. Green, who died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2007, will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapel, 521 West Main St., North Adams, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Francis of Assisi Church on Saturday at 10 a.m. by the Rev. Jerome Joseph Day, OSB, pastor of St. Raphael the Archangel Parish in Manchester, N.H.

Burial will follow in the family plot in Southview Cemetery. Donations in Mrs. Green's name may be made to the Patient Activities Fund at Sweet Brook Care Centers, 1561 Cold Spring Road, Williamstown, MA 01267; to the St. Francis' Renovation Fund; or to a charity of the donor's choice.

She also leaves a son-in-law, Sully Garofano; a daughter-in-law, Eileen Green; her son Kevin's partner, David Thaxton; and five grandchildren, Michael, Maura and Kelsey Green, Brian Green, USMC, and Meredith Green. Her sister, Eileen Walshe, died in August 2006. She also enjoyed horseback riding in her youth and had a particular interest in dogs, especially Irish wolfhounds.
