John C. Thomason, 80

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — John C. Thomason, 80, of 151 Lindley Terrace died Friday, Dec. 21, 2007, at North Adams Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Asheville, N.C., on June 15, 1927, son of John M. and Bonnie Hollifield Thomason, he moved to Williamstown as a child and attended local schools, including the former Williamstown High School, where he played on the baseball team.
A Navy veteran of World War II, he served with the 20th Construction Battalion (SeaBees) as a seaman on the islands of Eniwetok, Kwajalein, Saipan and Okinawa. He received the Purple Heart and many campaign medals.
Mr. Thomason was employed by the former General Electric Co. in the Naval Ordnance division for 40 years, retiring in 1987. Before that, he worked for a brief time for B.F. Winkleman Construction Co.
He was a member of Richard A. Ruether Post 152 American Legion and of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he assisted with the conducting of military honors at funerals. He also was a member of the Greylock Club in North Adams.
He and his wife, the former Patricia Brady, would have celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary March 7. They were married in Pownal, Vt.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Robert Lee Thomason, with whom he made his home, and Patrick Thomason of Las Vegas; two daughters, Arlene M. White of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Pamella Santarcangelo of Bennington, Vt.; three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE — A private funeral for Mr. Thomason was conducted Thursday, Dec. 27, at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, by the Rev. Mark Burke, pastor of the Parish of Sts. Patrick and Raphael in Williamstown.
Burial followed in the veterans' circle in Eastlawn Cemetery.
