Allen W.P. Hart, 71

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Allen W.P. Hart, 71, of Williamstown died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at home.

Born in Williamstown on Oct. 1, 1929, son of Henry Hart Sr. and Kate Alexander Hart, he attended Williamstown schools, where he was an outstanding athlete in baseball, football and basketball.

He graduated from Williamstown High School and attended Clark University in Atlanta for two years. He later transferred to New York University, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in health and physical education and was the first African-American to play on the varsity baseball team.

An Army veteran, he served during the Korean War and was stationed in Germany, where he played with the all-Army baseball team.

Mr. Hart was a partner in Henry Hart Construction Co. and later became a licensed ski instructor in the United States and Canada. He was an instructor at Haystack, Mount Snow, Prospect Ski Resort and Brodie Mountain. He was also an assistant football coach, freshman basketball coach and an instructor in physical education at Williams College. He was also a counselor in the ABC Program for Williams students.

He was a member of the Williamstown United Methodist Church, the Alpha Fraternity, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Clark University Alumni Association, and was active in the NAACP. He served as a selectman for the town of Williamstown from 1983 to 1986, and was a counselor for the Hart Resident Camp for Boys. He enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Taconic Golf Course.

He leaves a daughter, Nancy J. Macauley of Lanesborough; a sister, Margaret A. Hart of Williamstown; two brothers, Thomas Hart Sr. of Washington D.C., and James Y. Hart of Williamstown, and a granddaughter.

FUNERAL NOTICE — The funeral for Mr. Hart will be Saturday, Aug. 11, at 2 p.m. at First Methodist Church in Williamstown. Burial with military honors will be in Eastlawn Cemetery.

Calling hours will be at the church from noon until the time of the service. The family would request that any donations be made in his memory to the Camp Hart Inc., 24 Ide Road, Williamstown, MA 01267. GEORGE M. HOPKINS FUNERAL HOME is in charge of arrangements.
