Jane R. Grainger, 99

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Jane Rockwell Grainger, 99, of Sweetwood Retirement Community died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008, at North Adams Regional Hospital.

Born in Rockville, Conn., on Sept. 6, 1909, daughter of Sherman P. and Ida Howard Sumner, she resided in Rocky Hill, Conn., for 40 years. She later resided in Readsboro, Vt., for a decade before moving to Sweetwood 21 years ago.

She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Williamstown.

Her first husband, William Saville Grainger, and her husband, Benton Mellinger, are both deceased.

She leaves three daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Charles Kepner of Groton, Conn., Judith and Horace Wuerdemann of Venice, Fla., and Georgia and Milton Estrella of Houston; three granddaughters, Erika McGrath and her husband, James, of Fairfax, Va., Heather Douglass and her husband, Robert, of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Beckett Gilchrist of Austin, Texas; two grandsons, William Baker III and Brooks Wuerdemann and his wife, Stephanie; seven greatgrandchildren, Christopher, Benjamin and Rebecca Joy McCahill, Kyle and Erin McGarth, Amanda and Bradley Douglass and Clark and Anna Gilchrist, and her late granddaughter Kimberly Jean Kepner Cahill's husband, John McCahill of Canton.

Besides her husbands and granddaughter, she was predeceased by another granddaughter, Kristin Ann Kepner; two brothers, Howard and Peter Sumner, and her sister Mildred Sumner Schlaf, who died at age 101.

FUNERAL NOTICE — There will be no calling hours for Mrs. Grainger Mellinger. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in her name may be sent to the Kristen Kepner and Kimberly Kepner McCahill Memorial Scholarship Fund, in care of the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, 10 Columbus Blvd., 8th Floor, Hartford, CT 06106

Burial will be in Trinity College Memorial Garden in Hartford at the convenience of the family. Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, is in charge of arrangements.
