Edward H. Goodman, 99

November 22, 2008

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Edward Harold Goodman, 99, of 71 Sabin Drive died Saturday Nov. 22, 2008, at Sweet Brook Care Centers. He was a longtime executive with the former Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams.

Born in Malden on Aug. 2, 1909, son of Morris M. and Annie Kalker Goodman, he graduated from Malden High School and, in 1931, from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Mr. Goodman was a civil engineer with the state of New York until he joined Sprague in 1933, spending the rest of his career in industrial engineering. During World War II, he served as a key member of the Sprague management team that converted the company to wartime production. Later, he set up a high-volume production facility to manufacture a vital component of the "proximity" bomb that helped turn the tide in the Battle of the Bulge. Prior to his retirement in 1974, his responsibilities included planning and expansion of manufacturing facilities throughout the United States and establishing formal cost-reduction and monitoring systems.

Active in the Williamstown community, he was a longtime supporter of Pine Cobble School, serving as chairman of the new school building committee. He was a member of the Williamstown Outlay Committee and Zoning Board of Appeals. He also was an ardent supporter and board member of both the Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice of Northern Berkshire for many years. He was interested in music, camping, boating, skiing, gardening and tennis. Above all, he was a loving, generous and wise member of his family.

His wife, the former Jane Tennant, whom he married in 1940, died Nov. 6, 2005.

He leaves his daughter, Deborah de Gil and her husband, J. Manuel Gil Lissen-Dominguez, of Williamstown and Seville, Spain, and his grandson, Manuel Edward Gil-Goodman of Tampa, Fla.

FUNERAL NOTICE — Graveside services for Mr. Goodman will take place at the family plot in Westlawn Cemetery in Williamstown. There will be no calling hours and omission of flowers is requested. Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, is in charge of arrangements.
