Rufus M. Walker

Rufus Mason Walker, 91, of 100 Chestnut St., died yesterday at North Adams Regional Hospital following an long illness.
Born in Williamstown on Aug. 26, 1909, he was the son of the late Henry Walker and the former Elizabeth Upton Hathaway. He was educated in Williamstown schools. He later studied horticulture in Boston.
Mr. Walker started the family farm on Petersburg Road in Williamstown, where he farmed with his wife, Betty. He also worked as a bus driver and was employed at Warren Wire in Pownal, Vt., where he served as president of the Local union.
He later worked as a master gardner for several estates in the Williamstown area until the time of his retirement.
He enjoyed hiking, bird watching, gardening and drawing caricatures.
He leaves his wife, the former Betty Brookman, whom he married 65 years ago; six daughters, Eleanor Adams of Hancock, Elizabeth Brooks Wile of Williamstown, Louise Bronson of Lisbon, N.H., Ruth Fortin of North Adams and Heartwellville, Vt., Nancy Walker of North Adams and Mary LaCasse of North Adams; a son, Charles Walker of North Adams; 14 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sons, William Henry Walker and John David Walker.
The funeral will be held from the Sherman Burbank Memorial Chapel in Williamstown on Monday, Aug. 13, at 11 a.m. Burial will take place in the family lot in Eastlawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the George M. Hopkins Funeral Home 61-67 Spring St., Williamstown, on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. If friends desire, contributions in memory of Mr. Rufus Mason Walker may be made to either the American Diabetes Association or the National Audubon Society, through the office of George M.
