WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Robert E. Muir Sr., 84, of Sweetwood Retirement Community died Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, at home, surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Providence, R.I., on Dec. 26, 1924, he was raised in East Providence, R.I. He resided in Willimantic, Conn., for 56 years. He moved to his Williamstown home three years ago.
A Navy veteran of World War II, he served aboard the USS Charles Carroll (APA-28), the USS LST-76, and various smaller transports and landing craft during the invasions of Italy and southern France.
Mr. Muir was an accomplished tool and die maker, a machinist, and a manufacturing inspector. He retired in 1987 after spending 24 years as a nuclear quality control inspector with the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corp.
He and his wife, the former Theresa "Marie" Gee, also of Providence, were married in 1947. She was the love of his life and his best friend.
A devoted family man, he was happiest when he was with his wife, children and grandchildren. Some of his fondest memories were of family vacations on the beaches of Westerly, R.I., Cape Cod and in Sun City Center, Fla. It was growing up in East Providence that honed the irresistible charm and quick wit that endeared him to so many, said his family, who described him as an extraordinary husband, father, grandfather and friend.
Mr. Muir will be fondly remembered by everyone whose life he touched.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Robert E. Muir Jr. and his wife, JoAnn Muir, of Williamstown and William S. Muir of Danbury, Conn.; a daughter, Susan E. Baker and her husband, William C. Baker, of Willimantic; a sister, Isabelle Whitney of Brockton, and three grandchildren, Scott J.E. Baker of Lebanon, Conn., Bryan E. Muir of Cambridge and Christopher E. Muir of Brooklyn, N.Y.
 FUNERAL NOTICE — A celebration of the life of Mr. Muir will be held in February in Williamstown at date and location to be announced. A private burial will take place in Willimantic, Conn., at the family's convenience.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice of Northern Berkshire Inc., P.O. Box 869, North Adams, MA 01247. Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, is in charge of arrangements.
