Dudley W. R. Bahlman, 77

December 30, 2000

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Dudley W.R. Bahlman, 77, of 39 Sabin Drive died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at home after a long illness. He was the James Phinney Baxter III professor of history and public affairs, emeritus, at Williams College and former dean of the faculty.

"Dudley Bahlman was a dedicated teacher and scholar who imbued in generations of Williams students a deep and enriching understanding of the origins of Western traditions within European history," Williams President Morton Owen Schapiro said. "His sound judgment also served the college well during his term as dean of the faculty during the turbulent late '60s and early '70s. All of us at Williams are grateful for his many contributions."

Born in Cincinnati on March 19, 1923, son of William T. and Janet Rhodes Bahlman, he graduated from Yale University in 1946 and stayed on to earn his doctorate in history in 1951.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the Medical Corps in Europe.

Mr. Bahlman came to Williams in 1959 after eight years of teaching at Yale University. He retired in 1988. He served as dean of the faculty from 1969 to 1975 and as chairman of the history department from 1978 to 1983.

He specialized in the study of English history, particularly of the Victorian period. He spent 1965-66 in London on a Guggenheim fellowship, researching British church-state relations. He wrote "The Moral Revolution of 1688" and edited the two-volume diary of Sir Edward Hamilton, secretary to Prime Minister William Gladstone. In 1976, he was named the first Class of 1924 professor.

Locally, he served on the boards of Pine Cobble School and the Williamstown Theatre Festival and occasionally played small roles in WTF productions. He was also a member of The Century Association in New York City.

His wife of 48 years, the former Jean Mitchell, died June 11, 2000.

He leaves a son, Dudley R. "Dusty" Bahlman of Pittsfield; a daughter, Anne B. Miley of Lexington; a brother, William T. Bahlman Jr. of Cincinnati; three grandchildren, and a great-grandson.
