Through his Waterline Dive Shop, he taught scuba diving at Williams College and at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, and led diving trips all over the world. He also formerly owned and operated the former River House Restaurant, Water Works Laundry and Andrea Realty Co.

Born in New Rochelle, N.Y., on Jan. 1, 1939, son of Paul M. and Blanche Towne Kaufmann, he graduated from Mamaroneck (N.Y.) High School in 1956 and from Williams in 1960. An art history major at Williams, he was a star center on the football team and a member of the Over Weight 8, a singing group of nine students.

After college, he taught math and coached football at Blair Academy. He later served in the Peace Corps in Venezuela and worked on Wall Street for L.F. Rothschild and Co. After his return to Williamstown, he worked in the development office at Williams.

He also enjoyed skiing, and patrolled and instructed at Mount Snow in Vermont, and at Brodie Mountain and Jiminy Peak.

He was a member of the Williamstown Search and Rescue Team and the East Mountain Sportsmen's Club. He also enjoyed sailing, hunting, fishing and hiking and was a champion of environmental causes.

He leaves his wife, the former Susan Pederson of North Adams; a son, Jeffery Paul Kaufmann of New York City; two daughters, Andrea Sarah Kaufmann of Framingham and Katharine Blanche Kaufmann of Williamstown; a brother, William J. Kaufmann of New Rochelle; two grandchildren; and his former wife, Sandra Jean Kaufmann of Cape Cod.

A Memorial Service will be Saturday, Aug. 18, at 11 from First Congregational Church of Williamstown. Following the service, a reception will be held at Stetson Hall on the Williams College campus. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Williams College in memory of Robert Kaufmann, Class of 1960. He also leaves two grandchildren, Erin Michelle Kaufmann and Jason Samuel Kaufmann, both of New York City. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of GEORGE M. HOPKINS FUNERAL HOME in Williamstown.
