WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Gerald Crowley Madden, 92, of 118 Church St. died Thursday, May 28, 2009, at Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington, Vt.
Born in Williamstown on March 21, 1917, son of William P. and Catherine Crowley Madden, he attended local schools and graduated from the former Williamstown High School in 1935.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Madden was employed by the state Department of Public Works for many years until his retirement. Earlier, he worked at General Electric in Schenectady, N.Y.
He was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church. He enjoyed golf and was a longtime member of the Waubeeka Golf Links. He was a member of Richard Ruether Post 152 American Legion and the Williamstown House of Local History. He loved reading, singing, bird watching, and doing word jumbles. He was an avid Boston sports fan and enjoyed talking politics. He took great pride in spending time with his grandsons, Luke and Patrick. He lived his life with grace and good humor.
His wife, the former Marie Doucette, died in August 1987.
He leaves three sons, Edward G. Madden of Portland, Ore., Gerald W. Madden of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and William C. Madden and his wife, Sarah, of Williamstown; two grandsons, Luke Madden and Patrick Madden; his daughter-in-law's family and many thoughtful friends and neighbors at Proprietor's Field.
He was predeceased by his siblings Edward Madden, William C. Madden and Margaret Madden.
FUNERAL NOTICE — The funeral for Mr. Madden will be Monday, June 1, at 10 from Sherman Burbank Chapel in Williamstown. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Sunday, May 31, from 4 to 7 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Memorial contributions may be made to the Williamstown Youth Center in care of the funeral home.
