Elizabeth Conroy, 99

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Elizabeth Conroy, 99, died Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at the Sweet Brook Care Centers.

Born in Rathgilbert, Ballylinan Leix, Ireland, daughter of Denis and Margaret Mape Hyland, she came to the United States in 1925 at the age of 14. She resided in New York City for many years and moved to Williamstown in 1977 to be near family.

Mrs. Conroy was employed for 40 years as a domestic and as a devoted caregiver to the F.A.O. Schwarz family in New York. She worked well into her 70s for David and Joyce Milne at the former Highcroft School, where she was held in great esteem.

She was a communicant of the Parish of Sts. Patrick and Raphael and a member of St. Patrick's Guild, the Friendship Center and the Carmelite Third Order. While in New York, she was a member of the United Irish Counties and the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

Her husband, Patrick Conroy, whom she married on Dec. 22, 1934, in the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola in New York, died in 1977.

She leaves two sons, Edward Conroy and his wife, Anne, of Williamstown and John Conroy and his wife, Patricia, of Jackson Heights, N.Y. and Williamstown; four grandchildren, the Rev. Mary Elizabeth Conroy, Steven Conroy, Christopher Conroy and Elizabeth Redington, and six great-grandchildren, Patrick and John Redington and Shannon, Molly, Maeve and Meiris Conroy.

She was predeceased by six brothers and sisters in Ireland.

FUNERAL NOTICE — A Memorial Mass for Mrs. Conroy will be celebrated Saturday, June 12, at 11 from St. Patrick’s Church in Williamstown. There will be no calling hours. Memorial donations are suggested for the Hillcrest Educational Center or the Parish of Sts. Patrick and Raphael through Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247.
