Francis C. Chapman, 86

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Francis C. "Chip" Chapman, 86, of 1147 North Hoosac Road died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2010, at his home surrounded by his family.

Born in Williamstown on Jan. 27, 1924, a son of John and Mildred Charron Chapman, he attended schools in Williamstown and graduated from the former Williamstown High School in 1943.

A decorated Army veteran of World War II, he served as a sergeant with the 46th Engineer Construction Battalion. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

Most of Mr. Chapman's professional career was as a quality manager at the former General Cable Co. He worked at the plant from 1954 to 1986.

He was a 25-year member of the Gale Hose Company and Richard A. Ruether American Legion Post 152. He was a member of the First Methodist Church. He was an avid golfer at Waubeeka Golf Links and, in his younger years, he coached youth sports.

His first wife, the former Kathleen Guyette, whom he married in 1949, died in 1974.

He will be lovingly and dearly missed by his wife of 34 years, Rita (Gallagher) Chapman whom he married in 1976.

He leaves his wife, the former Rita Gallagher, whom he married in 1976; his stepsons John Stanton and his wife, Diane, of Amherst, and Steven Stanton of Merritt Island, Fla.; his stepdaughter, Susan Stanton of Williamstown; his step-grandchildren and their spouses, Chris and Reena Stanton of Montgomery Village, Md., Jason and Ellyana Stanton of Sunderland and Mike Stanton of Merritt Island, and his great-grandchild, Ava Stanton of Montgomery Village, and his many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, John Chapman, and three sisters, Jane Rickert, Phyllis Chapman and Doris Jones.

He will be lovingly and dearly missed by his wife of 34 years and missed by his stepchildren and grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE — Calling hours Mr. Chapman will take place Friday, Sept. 10, from 11 to 1 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St.. North Adams. A memorial service will directly follow at the funeral home at 1 and burial, with military honors, will immediately follow in Southview Cemetery in North Adams.

Donations in his memory can be made to the Williamstown Volunteer Fire Department through the funeral home.
