Charles B. Haley, 88

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Charles B. Haley, 88, of 1048 Hopper Road died Friday, Dec. 3, 2010, at Sweet Brook Care Centers.

Born in Williamstown on May 24, 1922, a son of George W. and Mary Haydock Haley, he attended schools in Williamstown.

A decorated Navy veteran of World War II, he was a gunner's mate during the Invasion of Normandy. He received Victory Medal, Good Conduct Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon and the European Theater of Operations medal with two stars. Mr. Haley was in charge of the honor guard that protected President Roosevelt and attended parades, funeral and other occasions.

Mr. Haley was an union carpenter and was involved in the construction of several projects in the area, including the Haley Development, Mount Greylock Regional High School and the Shaker House.

He was a great story teller and loved woodworking and living in the beauty of the Hopper.

His wife, the former Edith Babcock, died on May 15, 1988.

He leaves two brothers, Richard N. Haley Sr. and Robert E. Haley, both of Williamstown, and nieces and nephews including Carl Sweet and Nettie Mitchell, to whom he was like a father.

He was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers, Marion Sweet, Helen Sweet, George H. Haley and James W. Haley.

FUNERAL NOTICE — Funeral services for Mr. Haley will take place Thursday, Dec. 9, at 11 at Sherman Burbank Memorial Chapel in Williamstown. Burial with full military honors will follow in Westlawn Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, Dec. 8, from 4 and 7 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Memorial donations are suggested for the charity of the donor's choice through the funeral home.
