Ruth L. Greene, 83

March 07, 2011

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Ruth Light Greene, 83, of South Street, died on March 7, 2011, following a stroke.

She was born in Washington, D.C. on July 24, 1927, to Joseph and Pauline Light, who fled the former Soviet Union in 1925. She was the youngest of three sisters, the eldest of whom, Bella Zinnamon, predeceased her.

In 1945 she worked briefly for the British Indian delegation to the World Food Organization and went on to attend Miami University for one year before marrying Calvin Narcissenfeld in February 1948. Her husband died four years later.

In 1956, she volunteered to work in the Democratic presidential campaign and became the travel manager for the Kefauver vice presidential effort that fall. She then went on to work for the NCEC (National Committee for an Effective Congress), a lobbying group that supported progressive officials from both parties.

She married Fred Greene, professor of political science at Williams College, in March 1959, adopting his two daughters, Alicia and Evalyn. She volunteered at the Women’s Exchange in Williamstown for more than four decades and served as president of the Williamstown League of Women Voters from 1963 to 1964.

In the 1970s, Mrs. Greene worked as coordinator of the Williams College Language Center. In the 1980s, she ran the Cow Bell, a knitting, needlepoint and gift shop on Spring Street in Williamstown which she co-owned with Sarah Campbell.

Following her husband’s retirement in 1993, she accompanied him on many trips abroad under the auspices of Williams College Alumni programs.

She is survived by her husband; four children, Alicia, Evalyn, Joseph and Carolyn Greene; her sister Bette LaVine; her grandchildren, Joshua and Samuel Greene, Dakota Ross and Catherine McAllister; and her niece, Carole Krooth.

Donations in Ruth Greene’s memory can be made to the American Cancer Society and to the Visiting Nurses Association of Northern Berkshire.

FUNERAL NOTICE — Funeral services for Ruth Greene will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 9, at Congregation Beth El, 107 Adams St., Bennington, Vt., with a graveside ceremony at Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington immediately to follow. The Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, is in charge of arrangements.
