WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Lillian H. Williams, 97, of 35 Adams Road, died Sunday, May 22, 2011, at Sweet Brook Care Centers.
Born in Bronx, N.Y., on Aug. 13, 1913, a daughter of August and Irene Weiss Purves, she attended Theodore Roosevelt High School in New York. She moved to North Adams in 1940 and to Williamstown in 1979.
Mrs. Williams was employed by the former North Adams National Bank for 20 years as a loan clerk, retiring in the 1970s. She also had worked at the former McCraw & Tatro Clothing Store in North Adams as a buyer and, while in New York, as a receptionist at the former Metromone magazine, which covered the big bands.
A devoted homemaker and mother, she was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church of North Adams and a member of its Ladies' Guild. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, the Friendship Club at the Harper Center and the Houghton Roundtable in North Adams. She was a volunteer for the American Red Cross for 20 years and was a 60-year member of Order of Eastern Star Naomi Chapter 17 in North Adams. She enjoyed knitting and reading.
Her husband, S. Eric Williams Sr., whom she married on Dec. 20, 1931, in the Bronx, died Oct. 12, 1979.
She leaves her daughter-in-law, Rosemarie Andrews; four grandchildren, Kathy Bleezarde, Kurt Williams, Daisaka Williams and Takashi Williams; four great-grandchildren, Colin Bleezarde, Leah Williams, Kirby Williams and Connor Williams, and a great-great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Bleezarde.
Mrs. Williams was predeceased by her son, S. Eric Williams Jr., and her brother, William Purves.
FUNERAL NOTICE — Funeral services for Mrs. Williams will take place Saturday, May 28, at 10 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church in North Adams. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Friday, May 27, from 4 to 7 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams. Memorial donations are suggested for the Village Ambulance or to St. John's Church in North Adams through the funeral home.
