Phyllis L. Oleson, 89
July 01, 2011
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Phyllis Lucille Oleson, 89, of Old Mill Road died Friday, July 1, 2011, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.
Born in Williamstown on July 6, 1921, daughter of William R. and Myrtle Phelps Brookman, she graduated from the former Williamstown High School in 1939 and attended Bishop Memorial School of Nursing in Pittsfield.
Mrs. Oleson worked at the original Sweet Brook Nursing Home and practiced home nursing for the elderly. Later in life, she was a cook at Mount Hope Farm.
She delighted in reading, especially history and poetry, playing piano and hiking the Berkshire Hills. To see the ephemeral wild flowers, gather berries and enjoy the diverse, abundant and robust rural pleasures of her life, of these she never tired. She loved the companionship of her son's dogs, Pippi and Noni, and two hand-raised birds, Meister and Robin Hood. She also took a vital interest in the history of South Williamstown, explaining, researching and sharing the legacies of generations. She was active in the local Christian community and found in Christ the morning star of her life.
She leaves two sons, John Sigfried Oleson and Niels William Oleson, both of Williamstown; a brother, William Brookman of Conover, N.C., and two sisters, Emily Anderson of New Ashford and Dawn Fulford of Belfast, Maine.
Her former husband, John O. Oleson of Clarksburg, died in 1983 in the state of Florida. She was also predeceased by her brother Donald Brookman.
FUNERAL NOTICE — The family will meet for Mrs. Oleson's burial on Wednesday, July 6, in Southlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Rural Lands Foundation of Williamstown or to the Greylock Animal Hospital Stray Fund in care of Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247.
