July 01, 2011
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Katherine A. "Kay" Duby, 91, of 63 Langlois Ave. died Friday, July 1, 2011, at home.
Born in North Adams on June 30, 1920, daughter of Thomas F. and Mary A. Brennan Walsh, she graduated as valedictorian from the former St. Joseph's High School there in 1938 and from Our Lady of the Elms College in Chicopee in 1942 as a member of the Catholic college honor society Delta Epsilon Sigma.
Mrs. Duby was an educator for more than 30 years, first in West Stockbridge and then in the Adams school system, including at the former Adams High School from 1953 to 1959. Following time spent at home with her children, she returned to teaching in 1967, briefly at St. Joseph's and then for 15 years at Drury High School in North Adams, where she taught English. She retired in 1982.
She loved teaching and, in her later years, the regular contact she continued with former students was important to her.
She was an active parishioner at the former St. Francis' Parish in North Adams for many years and a former member of the Catholic Daughters of America Court Margaret 629. Most recently, she was a communicant of the Parish of Sts. Patrick and Raphael. Mrs. Duby was active in the reading buddy and exercise programs at the Harper Center and a member of the Friendship Club.
She and her husband, Henry Albert Duby, lived with their two daughters, Barbara and Jackie, in North Adams until her retirement. They moved to Williamstown in 1983, spending winters in New Port Richey, Fla. She became a full-time resident of Williamstown in 2007.
Her husband, whom she married on June 25, 1947, in North Adams, died in 1984. They were together for almost 47 years.
Besides her daughers, Barbara Morgan and her husband, Dwight, of Sandwich and Jacqueline Millar and her husband, David, of Plymouth, she leaves her grandchildren, Brad and Philip Millar, Gregory Morgan and his wife, Cherie, Kimberly Mebert and her husband, Mark, and Christopher Morgan; two great-grandchildren, and nephews and nieces including Dr. Thomas Walsh and his wife, Marcia, and Nancy Walsh and her husband, John Clancy.
She was predeceased by her brother, John Walsh and his wife, Mary, and by her niece Jane Walsh.
FUNERAL NOTICE — A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mrs. Duby will take place Saturday, July 9, at 11 at St. Patrick's Church, Southworth Street, Williamstown. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery in Adams.
Calling hours will be Friday, July 8, from 4 to 7 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Memorial donations are welcome to the Katherine A. Duby Memorial Scholarship Fund and may be made through the funeral home or to PO Box 632, Sandwich, MA 02563.
So sorry to hear of Mrs Duby's passing. Such a great teacher and a great role model. I and my husband both had the pleasure of having her class at Drury - When she would stop and see my former neighbor Mrs. Gazzinica she always made it a point to stop and say hello. Truly a life well lived. | from: | on: 07-13-2011 |

Greatest sadness...a genuine lady through and through and my absolute favorite teacher at Drury (71-75) and the favorite of many many classmates. She was a real joy for me to see and visit in town for over 30 years after graduation. And perhaps now she knows that it was not me who carved in the desk in Freshman English. It was our senior class president.... Sail on, Mrs. Duby. | from: Bruce Whitney | on: 07-08-2011 |

Kay was the best English teacher at Drury. She knew all the students by name (regardless of aptitude) and remembered them many years after. She helped my sister and I aspire to top 1% colleges by explaining the intricacies of the Financial Aid process. Our lives were changed for the better thanks to the personal actions of this lovely, kind lady. God Speed, Kay Dube.
Jackie and Barb - I'm sure you've heard it before but I'll say it again--your Mom was one of the most special people around. | from: Former student | on: 07-08-2011 |

Kay will be so missed.
My mothers will miss her dearest friend.
My brothers and sister will miss such a wonderful person who has touched our lives.
Thinking of her girls.
Rest in peace Kay.

Kay was one of the nicest ladies I have ever met. Whenever we were together she would always be greeted by former students and remembered each of them by name. My children tell me she was one of the best teachers they ever had at Drury High School. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her. | from: Lorraine B. Maloney | on: 07-06-2011 |
