WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Alice Irene Thoresen, 85, died Sunday, July 10, 2011, at Sweet Brook Care Centers, where she had resided for three years.
Born on Staten Island, N.Y., a daughter of Arne and Ida Finkelsen Sutherland, she had resided in New Jersey.
Mrs. Thoresen was a member of the Sons of Norway, through the Nor-Bu Lodge of Lake Telemark, Rockaway Township, N.J., and a life member of Order of Eastern Star. She loved to knit Norwegian sweaters and to make homemade jams and jellies for her family from her own garden. She also loved to play cards.
She spent much of her time helping others for many years. She was dearly loved and respected by her family and friends, and she will be greatly missed.
Her husband, Erling Steen Thoresen, whom she married Feb. 6, 1942, died Feb. 1, 2000.
She leaves three sons, Larry Thoresen and his wife, Jane, and Michael Thoresen and his wife, Sheila, all of Monroe, and Thomas Thoresen and his wife, Elizabeth, of Stamford, Vt.; a sister, Grace Holt and her husband, John, of Tennessee; a daughter-in–law, Lorraine Thoresen of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her son William Thoresen in 2009 and by her brother, Robert Sutherland.
FUNERAL NOTICE — Services for Mrs. Thoresen will be private. Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, is in charge.
