Hermon E. Allsop, 79

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Hermon Edward "Skip" Allsop, 79, life-long resident of Williamstown, died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012, at Williamstown Commons.

Born in North Adams on April 20, 1932, son of Hermon E. and Amy Brady Allsop, he attended Williamstown schools and graduated from the former Williamstown High School with the class of 1950. He continued his education at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, graduating in 1952.

An Army veteran of the Korean War, he served from December 1952 to 1954, and then three years in the Army Reserve.

Mr. Allsop was employed for many years by the former GE in Pittsfield, joining the company in June 1952 as an electrical engineering technician and returning in 1955 after his military service as as a technical specialist in the high-voltage laboratory of the Power Transformer Department. He retired in October 1988.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church and of Richard A. Ruether American Legion Post 152. He performed volunteer work for the Boy Scouts as a Troop Committee chairman and district commissioner, receiving the Arrow Head Award. He was also a longtime member of Williamstown Grange 366.

He was very active in the Williamstown community serving on the Board of Assessors since 1991; on the Conservation Commission from 1965-1974; and on the Zoning Board of Appeals from 1977-1992. A volunteer firefighter, he was a member of the Gale Hose Company since 1981 and a Forest Warden for 20 years, retiring in 2003

He and his wife, the former Jean M. Jefferson, were he married on May 26, 1972.

Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Sharon L. Parmenter of Bennington, Vt., and Susan M. Allsop of Agawam; two sons, Allen E. Allsop of Agawam and Robin C. Allsop of Southwick; a stepdaughter, Jacqueline McNeil of Montville, N.J.; a stepson, Michael McNeil of Gloucester, Va.; three grandchildren, Justin and Megan Parmenter and Ashton Allsop, and four step-grandchildren, Joseph and Tara Sharif and Connor and Shaelyn McNeil, and a great-granddaughter, Anna Parmenter.

A stepdaughter, Kathleen Kovach, died on July 10, 2010.

FUNERAL NOTICE — A funeral service for Mr. Allsop will be held Monday, Feb. 20, at 11 from Sherman Burbank memorial Chapel in Williamstown. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Sunday, Feb. 19, from 2 to 5 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams.

Memorial contributions may be made to Village Ambulance Service, American Cancer Society or First United Methodist Church of Williamstown in care of the funeral home.
