James B. Donihee, 81

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — James Barnum Donihee, 81, of 83 Bachand Ave., Spruces Mobile Home Park, died Sunday, March 25, 2012, at Williamstown Commons.
Born in Larchmont, N.Y., on Aug. 18, 1930, a son of Henry Murray and Helen Schermerhorn Donihee, he graduated from Yale University in 1952 and from the University of South Carolina. He was a longtime resident of the Spruces.
A decorated Navy veteran, he served as a lieutenant during the Korean War.
Mr. Donihee was employed by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, as a chemical engineer, including at the bureau's College Park (Md.) Metallurgy Research Center.
He had an encyclopedic knowledge of many fields. His expertise and interest ranged from classical music to higher mathematics and chemistry. In his later years, his joys included gardening, auditing classes at Williams College, and solving mathematical problems that had not been solved in years, according to a college newsletter.
He leaves a sister, Mary Ellen Donihee Ivers and her husband, Robert, of Big Flats, N.Y.; a brother, John Edward Donihee of Silver Springs, Md., and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
FUNERAL NOTICE — Funeral services for Mr. Donihee will take place Tuesday, March 27, at 1 p.m. at Sherman Burbank Memorial Chapel in Williamstown. Burial with military honors will follow in the Veterans Section of Eastlawn Cemetery. Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, is in charge of arrangements.
