Susan Benedict, 82

June 09, 2012

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Susan Carter Benedict, 82, of 35 Adams Road, Meadowvale Apartments, died peacefully on Saturday, June 9, 2012, at North Adams Regional Hospital.

Born on June 30, 1929, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey D. Carter Sr., she moved to Williamstown in 1968 to raise her three sons and to live near family members in Pownal and Bennington, Vt.

Mrs. Benedict was an administrative secretary at Mount Greylock Regional High School, and secretary to the director for the Weston Language Center at Williams College. Later in life, she found great satisfaction for many years as a personal care attendant at Sweetwood Retirement Community.

She was gifted with a gregarious and exceptionally friendly manner in the presence of all, said family. She was a competitive figure skater, an excellent cook, and a pianist. Her greatest talent was in knitting, textiles and the decorative arts. She knit and needle pointed beautiful sweaters, afghans and artworks throughout her life.

Mrs. Benedict was a devoted mother, a loving sister, and a special friend and neighbor to many in the Northern Berkshire community. Spirit, her beautiful rag doll cat, was her special companion for the last 15 years of her life. Through the past three years, she had a special bond with the staff and residents of Williamstown Commons, living there for several months in 2009 and again in 2012.

She leaves her three sons, Chaunce Benedict and his wife, Kay, of St. Albans, Vt., Carter Benedict and wife, Karen, of Sheridan, Wyo., and Cutts Benedict and wife, Ginny, of Athens, Ga.; her brother, Harvey D. Carter Jr. and his wife, Mary, of South Hero, Vt., and nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her sister, Hallie Carter Fish.

FUNERAL NOTICE — Mrs. Benedict's life will be celebrated in a private service of remembrance by her family together with the Rev. Peter Elvin, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church, Williamstown, at her graveside in Westlawn Cemetery in Williamstown, where she will be laid to rest beside her sister.

Donations in her memory may be made in lieu of flowers to the Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice of Northern Berkshire, Development Department, 71 Hospital Ave., North Adams, MA 01247 or in care of Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247.
