John S. Oleson, 62
July 20, 2012
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — John Sigfried Oleson, 62, of Old Mill Road, died Friday, July 20, 2012, at home.
Born in Pittsfield on March 7, 1950, son of John O. and Phyllis Brookman Oleson, he graduated from Mount Greylock Regional High School in 1968 and attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minn.
Mr. Oleson was primarily self-employed as a gardener. He also raised hens, vegetables and strawberries, and his foundling dogs Blue, Pippy Longstockings, Noni and Dusky.
He and his neighbor and friend Tara also raised a cow, Ellie, who is now in Bennington, Vt., and with his mother kept two birds, Robin Hood and Meister. He enjoyed especially puzzles, word play and conversation, and the good earth.
According to family, "like a good spring in a dry summer, John ran plentifully, clear and cold. To young and old, to educated and uneducated, to healthy and sick he was a beloved friend always anticipated; to his brother and mother, cherished. His wide sympathy for others, his reserve in judgement and profound attention to the world he encountered are his legacy."
He leaves a brother, Niels William Oleson of Williamstown.
FUNERAL NOTICE — Family and friends of Mr. Oleson will meet for burial Saturday, July 28, at 2:30 p.m. in Southlawn Cemetery in Williamstown.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Greylock Animal Hospital Stray Fund or to the Rural Lands Foundation of Williamstown in care of Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247.
