WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association has named Mount Greylock Regional High School the 2011 winner of the District Sportsmanship Award.
Representing District G, a group of Mount Greylock students, including Nathan Majumder, Hank Barrett, Sophia Dastoli and Kat Chenail, will travel with Mounties Athletic Director Lindsey von Holtz to Gillette Stadium in November to receive the award and attend the 18th annual MIAA/Massachusetts Secondary Schools Athletic Directors Association Sportsmanship Summit.
"We as a school have worked extremely hard in the last few years to improve the sportsmanship and behavior of our fans and athletes at contests. I believe the Pep Club and the new 'Greylock Way' are additional steps in creating a positive atmosphere at our school," von Holtz said.
The Sportsmanship Award is given annually to one school from each of the eight athletic districts within the MIAA structure, which includes 377 member schools. Mount Greylock also received the award in 2003. The MIAA is a private, nonprofit organization run by its member schools; its aim is to govern, coordinate, and promote education-based programs for high school students.
Mount Greylock also has a significant number of students who have recently been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Three seniors, Joshua Harrington, Edward Kleiner, and Grace Singleton, are National Merit semifinalists and will be among the 16,000 students who compete for National Merit Scholarships to be awarded in the spring.
In addition, Luke Costley, Thomas Dils, John Karabinos, Naomi LaChance, Karl Mick, Alexander Montiel, Rebekeh Packer, and Aaron Taylor have been named Commended Students in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program. Each of these eight seniors will receive a letter of commendation from the school and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
"The National Merit Scholarship recognition is very impressive as students must score in the top 5 percent nationwide to receive a letter of commendation or qualify as a semi-finalist. We are very proud of our students' achievement in this national competition," Principal Tim Payne said.
Of the accolades Mount Greylock students have received this fall, Superintendent of Schools Rose Ellis said, "We are very proud of our students' accomplishments and their leadership skills. They serve as fine Mount Greylock role models."
