WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The new Youth Center is on target for its October opening, according to Executive Director David Rempell.
The new 12,000 square foot building on Elementary School land broke ground on March 20 after a long debate about its location and size.
The piece of land was sectioned off, the playground was moved and construction began while school was in session. Most of the construction is eyed for the summer with an Oct. 1 completion date.
On Friday, Rempell said in an e-mail that "everything is going well" and the project is schedule. There have been no major surprises that have impacted the center's budget, he said.
The new building replaced their former Cole Avenue center which is now for sale. That building worn into deplorable conditions and the center had partnering with the Elementary School since the new school was built in 2002.
The Youth Center embarked in 2009 on a capital campaign that raised more than $3 million with a 2010 groundbreaking in mind. However, the start was delayed twice - once because of debate over the playground and another time to give architects more time to plan.
The new building is expected to allow the school and the center to share resources and center officials have already said that they have new programming that will build that partnership.
