'Bomb Cyclone' Hitting Northeast on Saturday
08:40AM / Friday, March 11, 2022

A massive storm system moving against the East Coast is expected to bring heavy and freezing rain to the region on Saturday.

The National Weather Service in Albany, N.Y., has updated its watch to a winter storm  warning beginning about 4 a.m. Saturday and running through Sunday. The bulk of the storm will be to the north and west of the region but the Berkshires are still expected to get at least 6 inches of snow.

The forecast is for 5 to 9 inches of snow during the day and up to a foot in the higher elevations. Snow may fall up to an inch an hour during the day.

Travel will be very difficult due to snow-covered roadways and low visibility. Gusty winds will contribute to blowing and drifting of snowfall.

The heaviest snow will fall across North County and Southern Vermont but Southern Berkshire can expect 2 to 6 inches with gusty winds. The advisory for South County runs from 7 a.m. through 10 p.m. Saturday.

Accuweather says the storm is expected to turn into a "bomb cyclone," when the atmospheric pressure within its center drops swiftly.

"A fast-moving and rapidly strengthening storm will bring intense weather and dramatic weather changes to the eastern half of the nation, with the most extremes in store for the Northeast," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dave Dombek said.

Precipitation may begin with rain and freezing rain in some areas and turn to snow as the temperature plummets and the area could get some thunder snow. Temperatures could drop into the single digits in some areas as the weekend advances.

Reminder that winter parking bans are still in effect and communities can be expected to declare storm emergencies. Don't park on the streets and call ahead to ensure your destination has not closed. Driving is expected to be treacherous by Saturday evening.

The SATs scheduled at McCann Technical School have been canceled this Saturday and the Maplefest at Hopkins Forest in Williamstown has moved to Sunday.
