Clark Art Talk on 'Secrets From the Press'08:36AM / Monday, August 14, 2023 | |
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.—On Wednesday, Aug. 23, the Clark Art Institute presents a talk on Jan van der Straet's major print "The Invention of Copper Engraving," acquired just last year.
Curatorial Assistant for Works on Paper Allison Marino reveals lesser-known facts about the early modern printer's workshop. The talk takes place at 1 pm in the Manton Study Center for Works on Paper, which houses the Clarks collection of more than 6,500 prints, drawings, and photographs.
According to a press release:
In this talk, Marino considers how the print transports the viewer to sixteenth-century Europe to stand alongside master printmakers and their apprentices in a bustling workshop. The print further uncovers the roots of present-day copyright in Dürer's legal battle for his monogram and the central presence of female printers in eighteenth-century workshops.
