By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff
05:21AM / Wednesday, June 21, 2023
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Charter Review Committee last week discussed whether the town should consider creating a mechanism for ballot votes to approve questions normally decided by town meeting.   Chair Andrew Hogeland told his colleagues at their June 15 meeting that any such move would be unique in the commonwealth, but he cited a couple of precedents where other communities have taken steps in that direction.   "The [Massachusetts Municipal Association] lawyer had two examples," Hogeland said. "Lexington put a bylaw in place 40 years ago which had allowed a subsequent election to repeal a zoning bylaw [passed by town meeting]. And he gave the example of

Splash Into Summer Safely
09:36AM / Monday, June 19, 2023
What better way to cool off during the long, hot days of summer than a refreshing dip in cool water? Even with the promise of fun that swimming in pools, streams, and lakes provide, it is not without risks.   Every year in the U.S. nearly 900 children and adolescents die from unintentional drowning. Diving a little deeper into the grim reality we learn that more children between the ages of 1 to 4 die from drowning than any other cause. For children ages 5 to 14, drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional death. While most drownings in children 1 to 4 happen in swimming pools, babies and young children can drown in as little as 2 inches of water (think bathtubs, garden

Manufactured Home Talk Dominates Williamstown Planning Board
By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff
05:37AM / Monday, June 19, 2023
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Following a familiar pattern, the second Planning Board meeting of its 2023-24 cycle was dominated by an issue the board hoped to have settled at the 2023 annual town meeting.   The board Tuesday heard both support and criticism for its proposed bylaw amendment that would have allowed the placement of a manufactured home on any parcel where a single-family "stick built" home currently can be erected in town.   The proposal was narrowly rejected at May's annual town meeting, where the majority of participants favored the zoning change, but it failed to achieve the two-thirds majority needed for passage.   At a May 23 meeting to

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board agreed Monday to provide at least $1,000 and up to $2,500 of town funds to support the fireworks display at Taconic Golf Club on July 4.   Board member Jane Patton, who manages the club, brought a funding request to the body and argued that the pyrotechnic display is an opportunity to build community that should be supported by taxpayer dollars.   "I've had a number of people ask me why the town doesn't cover the cost," Patton said.   "It is a town event meant to bring the town together. I think it's reasonable to say people enjoy it, and it's been quite successful as a town event."   Patton

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Mount Greylock Regional School Committee last week unanimously approved three-year contracts with the district's three collective bargaining units.   The votes, which came after an hour-long executive session to discuss the final terms, were contingent on ratification by the district's teachers, support staff and cafeteria workers.   Pending that ratification, no details of the contracts, which run through fiscal year 2026, were discussed during open session. But on Monday, Superintendent Jason McCandless said the financial terms in the deals were not unanticipated.   "The contracts approved are all accounted for within the budget
