Williamstown Fire District Meeting Set for TuesdayBy Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff 04:47AM / Monday, May 22, 2023 | | WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Fire District voters Tuesday will be asked to approve a $524,000 fiscal year 2024 operating budget and 10 other items on an 11-article warrant at the annual district meeting. The budget is up 6.3 percent from the $492,882 approved by district voters last spring for the current fiscal year. It comes up midway through the meeting, set for 7:30 p.m. in the gymnasium at Williamstown Elementary School. The two largest drivers of the bottom line increase are the maintenance and operation line item and management services. More Than 400 Compete in Steel Rail RacesiBerkshires.com Sports, 03:28PM / Sunday, May 21, 2023 | | PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Williamstown's Alex White was the first runner across the finish line at Sunday's MountainOne Steel Rail Marathon on the Ashuwilticook Trail. White maintained a 6 minute, 26 second per mile pace over the 26.2 mile course from Pittsfield to Adams and back. He reached the finish line in 2:48.42.41 to finish 5-1/2 minutes ahead of the rest of the other 72 runners who finished the event's marathon division. The fastest finisher in the marathon was Stephen Gulley of Billingham, the event's lone hand pedaler, who finished in 2:20:05.36. Northern Berkshire Habitat for Humanity Raffling ShedStaff Reports , 02:00PM / Sunday, May 21, 2023 | | WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Northern Berkshire Habitat for Humanity's shed raffle has returned. The 8-by-10 garden shed, funded by an anonymous donor, built by the McCann Carpentry Program students, and decorated by the Northern Berkshire Habitat for Humanity construction crew, will be on display on Main Street in Williamstown, across from the end of Water Street, in front of the former Masonic Lodge at the end of May. Williams Softball Stays Alive at NCAAs Against Carpenter's Rams10:12PM / Friday, May 19, 2023 | | SALISBURY, Md. – Kayla Chang went 3-for-4 at the plate and stole three bases to help the Williams College softball team Friday beat Framingham State, 9-4, in an elimination game at the NCAA Division III tournament. Sadie Leonard earned the win in the circle, striking out 12 and walking just two. Framingham State’s Gwen Carpenter, a graduate of Mount Everett, went 1-for-2 with an RBI in the loss. Carpenter finished her junior season with the Rams batting .393 with a team-best eight home runs. In separate sessions with the Conservation Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals, fire district officials got the OK for a "cut and fill" project that will raise the grade of the area planned for construction to bring it roughly to the same elevation as Main Street (Route 2). To the Editor: It was abundantly clear before, during, and after the Williamstown town meeting on Tuesday night, that there is an erroneous understanding of the distinction between mobile, manufactured, and modular homes resulting in most people confusing manufactured with modular. The name "mobile homes" was a simple name change to make this type of home seem better and preferable to what they were originally called, "trailers." Trailers, like mobile homes, were living units built on a chassis with wheels making them easily movable over the highway.
