 PLYMOUTH, Mass. — Denis Russell served his country in the Navy from 1969 to 1975 as a petty officer, third class. This proud Vietnam veteran grew up in Somerville. His basic training took him to the Navy's only boot camp, Naval Station Great Lakes in Illinois. "They used to shut off the heat at night. I only had one blanket and in the morning you had an eighth of an inch of ice on the windows," he remembered. He also did A School, or vocational, training in Illinois as well and offered this: "I worked really hard and wanted to prove I had worth and value and skills. I graduated 11th in my class of 500. WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Three longtime contributors to the town were called out for recognition at Thursday's annual town meeting, including one who was recognized posthumously. Retired Fire Chief Craig Pedercini earned the municipal employee of the year award from the local chapter of League of Women Voters. Select Board member Jane Patton was recognized by one of her colleagues on the occasion of her final meeting in the post. And Virginia Sheldon received the town's top honor for volunteerism.  WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Town meeting Thursday decided to implement a ban on smoking or vaping tobacco products in apartments with more than four units and to limit the number of days in a year that home can be rented as an "Airbnb." As expected, those were two of the issues that generated discussion in a 2 1/2-hour meeting in the Mount Greylock Regional School gymnasium. But, in the end, the votes were not particularly close in either case. The smoking ban, which had the support of the town's Board of Health and Select Board, passed on a vote of 148-56.  WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.— The Clark Art Institute will host an artist's talk with British artist Laura Ellen Bacon on Thursday, May 29, at 4 p.m. Bacon is one of the artists participating in the upcoming "Ground/work 2025" exhibition. Bacon will be on the Clark's campus in May to construct a sculpture using willow branches. Attendees are invited to join her outdoors at the sculpture's location, situated beyond the bridge from the Lunder Center where the Nan Path and Woodland Trail intersect, to learn about her creative process as it unfolds. WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — A large commercial property near the Vermont border is set to be auctioned off next month. Last weekend, JJ Manning Auctioneers posted signs at 877 Simonds Road (U.S. Route 7) announcing a June 17 auction at the property, which was home to the former Chenail farm stand and currently houses other businesses, including a martial arts studio. The online advertisement for the property says it encompasses about 7.1 acres of mixed-use land with eight structures, including a two-family home and two greenhouses. By a vote of 5-0, the board OK'd up to $5,000 to fund events that will kick off with a Progress Pride Flag raising in front of town hall on Sunday, June 1, followed by a community meal on the lawn of the Milne Public Library.
