Environmental Defense Fund President Speaking at Williams Commencement

Bloomfield WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Environmental Defense Fund President Fred Krupp will be the principal speaker at Williams College's 234th commencement exercise on Sunday, June 4.    The day before, U.S. Holocaust Museum Director Sara Bloomfield will deliver the college's baccalaureate lecture. Krupp and Bloomfield will both receive honorary doctor of laws (LLD) degrees during the commencement ceremony.   Fred Krupp is the president of the Environmental Defense Fund, a global nonprofit environmental advocacy group based in New York City. Williamstown Rotary Members Support Louison House

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — On April 15, Rotary members showed up at Louison House with supplies and tools, ready to get their hands dirty.     They built a sandbox, cleaned up the play area for the upcoming season, planted flowers and repaired a worn-out play set.   "Rotary members are people of action.  Our club raised funds and used matching grants from Rotary District 7890 to buy the materials needed to spruce up the playground," Susan Clarke, Rotary Club of Williamstown President said. Clark Art Screens 'Things to Come'

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — On Thursday, May 4 at 6 pm, the Clark Art Institute screens "Things to Come" in its auditorium, located in the Manton Research Center.    Presented in conjunction with the Clark's exhibition "Portals: The Visionary Architecture of Paul Goesch," this is the fourth event in the Clark's five-part series Visionary Architecture on Film. Clark Art Receives Cultural Sector Recovery Grant

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Clark Art Institute recently received a Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) grant as part of its Cultural Sector Recovery Grants for Organizations program.    The Clark received $75,000 to help maintain programs and operations. The grant program was funded from the $8.7 billion provided to the Commonwealth from the American Rescue Plan Act.   The Clark is one of seventy-two Berkshire-based organizations among the 1,218 cultural organizations that have received a combined $51,063,350 grant funding from the MCC. Over 1,000 organizations and 4,000 artists, creatives, culture bearers, and gig workers across Massachusetts received awards from MCC

Williamstown Housing Trust Exploring New Ideas

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Facing the prospect of an infusion of cash at a time of low demand for its popular DeMayo Mortgage Assistance Program, the board of the Affordable Housing Trust last week brainstormed about new initiatives it could pursue in fiscal year 2024.   Chair Andrew Hogeland noted at the outset of the April 19 meeting that the trust is in line to receive a little more than $200,000 in American Rescue Plan Act funds and $120,000 in Community Preservation Act funds if the former allocation is approved by next month's annual town meeting.   The trust began April with a balance of just more than $203,000.   "If all that [anticipated funding] goes

Williamstown Select Board Candidates Speak on Town Issues

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Three candidates will vie for two seats on the Select Board in the May 9 town election.    Incumbent Andrew Hogeland and newcomers Stephanie Boyd and Paul Harsch are the only races on the ballot.    A fourth candidate, Andrea "Andi" Bryant, told iBerkshires.com that she has withdrawn from the race due to a family emergency, but her name will appear on the ballot.   iBerkshires.com asked the three candidates for the two Select Board seats a series of questions. WCMA to Host Tattoo Session, Meditations With Tibetan Lama

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Williams College Museum of Art will host Lama Tashi Norbu, one of the artists featured in the current exhibition "Across Shared Waters: Contemporary Artists In Dialogue with Tibetan Art" from the Jack Shear Collection, for three programs from April 25-27, culminating in a live tattooing session at WCMA.   Tashi Norbu will lead drop-in meditation sessions in the galleries from 5 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25, and Wednesday, April 26.   On Thursday, April 27, the artist will tattoo a participant from the community, basing the design on Tibetan astrology and the recipient's own personal Buddhist mantra.
