In Williamstown, 'An Odd Summer' as Merchants See Drop in Tourism

The Williamstown Theatre Festival came back from the pandemic in 2021 with 64 performances, including three outdoor shows. This year, there were a total of 26 performances during a one-month run. Williamstown Planners Narrow Questions on a 'Cottage Court' Bylaw

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Planning Board on Tuesday discussed developing bylaw amendment proposals to allow "cottage court" development, facilitate mixed-use residential and commercial properties and create a limited path for manufactured homes on residential lots.   The manufactured home issue came to the board in the form of a proposal from Chair Peter Beck, who suggested that rather than allowing manufactured housing by right on any residential property the town could allow manufactured homes as accessible dwelling units to existing homes.   Beck framed the idea as a compromise from the bylaw the board advanced to the 2023 annual town meeting, where a majority

Clark Art Hosts Nature Hike

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — On Thursday, Aug. 17 at 5:30 pm, the Clark Art Institute hosts a nature hike along the Stone Hill trails.    Bud Wobus, professor emeritus of geology at Williams College, introduces the hike; then the Clark's Head of Public Programs Will Schmenner leads the hike.   According to a press release:   Exploring the 500 million-year geologic history of Stone Hill, Wobus traces the processes of mountain building and erosion, bracketed by two vastly different shorelines, that have sculpted the hill we see today. Williamstown's Comprehensive Plan Committee Nears Final Report

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The end is in sight for the committee charged with drafting the town's plan for the next two decades.   At its Aug. 1 meeting, the Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee worked through members' concerns about specific language in the draft document, including in a 75-point implementation plan that consumes eight pages in a 42-page document.   The steering committee, which started its work at the beginning of 2022, may be ready to send a completed plan to the Planning Board for approval as soon as October.   Although the plan is not, in and of itself, a binding document that creates zoning bylaws or allocates tax dollars, it is meant to

Although the mild temperatures are set to continue this weekend, temperatures should briefly break back into the 80s.    Today, Thursday, Aug. 3, expect temperatures in the high 70s with mostly sunny skies, according to AccuWeather. There is the potential for thunderstorms this afternoon.   On Friday, expect morning thundershowers. There is the possibility of damaging winds, flash flooding, and hail. No One Injured in Monday Fire at Williams Dorm

A truck from a fire restoration service is seen in front of Hubbell House at Williams College on Tuesday afternoon.    WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Quick thinking by a Williams College student is being credited with helping to limit damage from a fire in a residence hall on Monday night.   Firefighters from Williamstown and Pownal, Vt., responded to a fire that was reported at around 9 p.m. in Hubbell House.   No injuries resulted from the blaze, which fire officials say could be traced to a bathroom light and ceiling fan.   "Hats off to the student in the room," Williamstown Fire Department Assistant Chief Mike Noyes said on Tuesday.
