The Great British Walkoff: Koperniak Scores Game-Winner as Team GB Advances

REGENSBURG, Germany -- Hoosac Valley graduate Matt Koperniak Tuesday scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th as Great Britain came from behind to beat Spain, 10-9, and advance from a qualifying tournament to play in March's World Baseball Classic.   Koperniak, a native of London, was the "ghost runner," starting the 10th inning on second base.   After a failed bunt attempt, Great Britain's Justin Wylie reached on a fielder's choice.   Koperniak was called out at third, but after a British challenge, the umpires ruled he was safe.   With runners at the corners and one out, Alex Crosby hit a sacrifice fly to left to drive in Koperniak

Lee's Fraser Leads Team to Williams Invitational Win

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Lee's Thomas Fraser carded rounds of 70 and 74 to finish 2-over-par at Taconic Golf Club and lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic men's golf team to the championshp of this weekend's Williams Fall Invitational.   The Engineers finished a combined 15 strokes over par at the two-day event, 12 strokes better than runner-up Skidmore College.   Fraser, a senior for the Engineers, placed fifth last year at the Liberty League Championships and was named a Golf Coaches Association of America all-America Scholar.   Eighteen teams competed in this weekend's event.   The hosts from Williams placed fourth behind John Pagano and Will Rich, who each

LENOX, Mass. -- Hundreds of amateur athletes Sunday won the 46th Josh Billings Runaground Triathlon where, as the motto goes, "To finish is to win."   The day's fastest finishers featured familiar names as the four-man team from Allen Heights Veterinary was the first across the finish line at Camp Mah-Kee-Nac, which took over this year from Tanglewood as the triathlon terminus.   As usual, teams headed out from downtown Great Barrington for a 27-mile bike ride to the boat launch at the Stockbridge Bowl, where pedalers gave way to paddlers for a 5-mile spring around the lake. Mount Greylock Schools Invite Community to 'Talking to Kids About Racism'

Williamstown ZBA OKs Recovery Center at Former Sweet Brook

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — After discussion over four meetings, the Zoning Board of Appeals approved an application to operate a chemical dependency rehabilitation facility in the former Sweet Brook nursing home on Cold Spring Road.

It was unanimously approved on Thursday with conditions related to fencing and landscaping.

"We've been revisiting this now [for] several months, we've asked the petitioner to work with with the abutter, they've done so and they've come back with a proposal that appears to make both parties happy," Chair Andrew Hoar said.

Williamstown Board Looks to Build Community Among Other Goals

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board is hoping to put "unity" back in the community.   At its Monday meeting, the board discussed the goals for 2022-23 that it compiled at an off-camera meeting last month at the Williams Inn.   The board identified five initiatives for the year that concludes with May's town election. Williamstown Community Chest Fun Run Set for Saturday

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Williamstown Community Chest will hold its 14th Fun Run on Saturday.   This community event consists of two races, a 5K run and a 1-mile kids’ run/family walk. The Fun Run races are open to everyone, veteran or first-time runners and daily or occasional walkers.  Families with pets and strollers are also welcome to participate. Both race events begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Williamstown Youth Center, 66 School St.   Sign-in and registration begin at 8 a.m. on the day of the race. Williams College Coach Joe Doyle Recognized

To the Editor:

Property tax is a regressive tax but it doesn't have to be.

While in most communities each property owner pays the same tax rate per $1,000 of home value, the impact on your pocketbook varies based on your income level. Those in the bottom income quintile pay 5.4 percent of their income on municipal tax while the top quintile pays less than 3 percent, and the top 1 percent of earners pay only 1.6 percent of their household income, according to the Institute of Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP).

In essence, the less you have, the more of your income you are expected to pay.
