PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Police Chief Michael Wynn is ready to represent Western Massachusetts on the state's new commission for police training.   Wynn's appointment to the Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission was announced last week by Gov. Charlie Baker and Attorney General Maura Healey.   "The fact that I'm a Western Mass police chief is something that's been greatly talked about in the last several days," he said. "I don't think anybody expected that the governor's appointed chief would be from this far west."   The independent agency with appointees from the governor and attorney general was established by

By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff
02:38AM / Thursday, April 08, 2021
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Ask Jeffrey Johnson for his campaign's "elevator pitch," and you had better hope that lift is taking you on a ride in a skyscraper.   Johnson, a lifelong resident of the town, has an ambitious agenda for town government and boundless energy to talk about his priorities.   But at his core, Johnson wants to do what he can to heal the wounds that have divided the town over the last year.   "Our hearts are hurting," Johnson said. "No matter what side of the equation you're on, we all know we need changes to be made. Unfortunately, due process takes time, and change is scary.   "I hope to provide a voice for

By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff

REVERE, Mass. — Gov. Charlie Baker on Wednesday urged Bay State residents currently eligible for COVID-19 vaccinations to find appointments before eligibility opens up to everyone 16 and older later this month.   "If you are over the age of 65, if you're over the age of 55, I think it would be great if you signed up, pre-registered, got an appointment to get vaccinated now that it's your turn," Baker said. "Because you are, based on all the data associated with vulnerable populations, among the most at risk when it comes to dealing with COVID.   "We're thrilled that we're over 80 percent with that population. We're above the national

Williamstown DIRE Committee: Police Discussions Meant to Help Department
By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires Staff
03:44AM / Wednesday, April 07, 2021
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Members of the town's racial equity committee Monday emphasized that calls for accountability in the town's police department are not attacks on the town's police officers.   Rather, they said it is an effort to support law enforcement officers.   "I feel like what we have all been trying to work toward here is that police officers who are not doing all of these things we've been shocked and dismayed and violated by are supported," Aruna D'Souza said. "And part of that support is also making sure their colleagues are acting to the highest standards and their colleagues aren't doing things that bring the whole

07:47PM / Monday, April 05, 2021
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Select Board Monday voted unanimously to offer the interim town manager position to Charles T. Blanchard.   Board members said that while they thought both the finalists they interviewed were qualified, they were concerned that Robert T. Markel potentially would be torn between his duties in Williamstown and his current role as interim town administrator in Hampden.    “He has a 20-plus hour commitment there which means he’d be limited to a 20-hour commitment here,” Andrew Hogeland said. “When Hugh [Daley], [Town Manager Jason Hoch] and I talked about the job, we thought a part-time job would be OK.   “I still feel
