 PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- After Saturday's rain forced a postponement, the Striking Out in the Berkshires Jimmy Fund fund-raiser will try again on Saturday, July 1 at Clapp Park. Players of any ability are welcome to participate in a charity baseball and softball games. So are players with no ability at all. "I've had some people call and text me and ask, 'Do you have to be a baseball player?' No, you don't," organizer Joe DiCicco said last year of the Striking Out Cancer in the Berkshires event. WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The trustees of the town's Affordable Housing Trust on Wednesday approved a grant under its DeMayo Mortgage Assistance Program for the first time in more than a year. On a vote of 5-0, the trustees OK'd a $15,000 award to a longtime resident of Pownal, Vt., looking to become a first-time homeowner in Williamstown. A representative of lender Greylock Federal Credit Union told the trustees that the would-be homeowner would have needed help from family to make the purchase happen, but for the grant from the town. WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Conservation Commission on Thursday set conditions for what is now planned for a 16-unit residential development on the site of the former Grange Hall on Water Street. Engineer Charlie LaBatt of Guntlow and Associates appeared before the Con Comm to explain the erosion and stormwater management plan for the project, which has been scaled back considerably from when it first was discussed at Town Hall about a year ago. WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Charter Review Committee last week discussed whether the town should consider creating a mechanism for ballot votes to approve questions normally decided by town meeting. Chair Andrew Hogeland told his colleagues at their June 15 meeting that any such move would be unique in the commonwealth, but he cited a couple of precedents where other communities have taken steps in that direction. LENOX, Mass. -- Three Berkshire County Youth Soccer League teams have qualified for the Massachusettts Tournament of Champions this weekend in Lancaster. Two girls teams and one boys team are advancing to the state tourney based on their performance throughout the spring: the 7th- and 8th-grade Lenox Gold girls, the 5th- and 6th-grade North Adams Breakers girls and the 5th- and 6th-grade Williamstown Vipers boys. According to Police Chief Michael Ziemba, the New York State Police searched an area on White Oaks Road near the Vermont line. Nothing was found.
