 What better way to cool off during the long, hot days of summer than a refreshing dip in cool water? Even with the promise of fun that swimming in pools, streams, and lakes provide, it is not without risks. Every year in the U.S. nearly 900 children and adolescents die from unintentional drowning. Diving a little deeper into the grim reality we learn that more children between the ages of 1 to 4 die from drowning than any other cause. For children ages 5 to 14, drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional death. Book lovers and Clark staff members discuss a book related to the summer's exhibition, "Edvard Munch: Trembling Earth." This year's book selection is "So Much Longing in So Little Space: The Art of Edvard Munch," a personal meditation on Munch's life and work by Norwegian author Karl Ove Knausgård. WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Following a familiar pattern, the second Planning Board meeting of its 2023-24 cycle was dominated by an issue the board hoped to have settled at the 2023 annual town meeting. The board Tuesday heard both support and criticism for its proposed bylaw amendment that would have allowed the placement of a manufactured home on any parcel where a single-family "stick built" home currently can be erected in town. The proposal was narrowly rejected at May's annual town meeting, where the majority of participants favored the zoning change, but it failed to achieve the two-thirds majority needed for passage. WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board agreed Monday to provide at least $1,000 and up to $2,500 of town funds to support the fireworks display at Taconic Golf Club on July 4. Board member Jane Patton, who manages the club, brought a funding request to the body and argued that the pyrotechnic display is an opportunity to build community that should be supported by taxpayer dollars. "I've had a number of people ask me why the town doesn't cover the cost," Patton said. "It is a town event meant to bring the town together. The votes, which came after an hour-long executive session to discuss the final terms, were contingent on ratification by the district's teachers, support staff and cafeteria workers. Pending that ratification, no details of the contracts, which run through fiscal year 2026, were discussed during open session.
