WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board and Planning Board last week filled a vacant seat on the Planning Board. By a vote of 8-0, the combined panels appointed Williams College professor Allison Guess to the post vacated earlier this year by Dante Birch. Guess will serve on the Planning Board through May's annual town election, when the seat will be on the ballot for the remainder of the five-year seat Birch won in 2019. Guess is a professor of Africana Studies at the college and is a trained geographer and environmental scientist. WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Two days after being re-elected to the Mount Greylock Regional School Committee, a member was at odds with the rest of the committee and the district's superintendent at the committee's monthly meeting. Steven Miller, who was first appointed to the committee in 2016, was in a minority of one on a vote to elect a chair, advocated that the committee "investigate" the curricula in the public schools and said the superintendent acted in contradiction to advice from the district's counsel — all before the meeting was 40 minutes old. WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Police arrested a man Thursday on nearly a dozen drug-related and firearms charges after an incident in South Williamstown. Williamstown Police on Friday said the department was notified by several callers about a "running vehicle located in the travel lane at the Five Corners intersection with an unresponsive operator at the wheel." An officer responding to the scene was able to awaken the operator, police said. After observing the individual and based on evidence in plain view inside the vehicle, the officer believed the subject was under the influence of narcotics. The district had hoped to put the question to voters in December but last month walked back that idea in hopes that it will have more concrete numbers to put before voters. Town Manager Bob Menicocci Monday told the Select Board that the Massachusetts Department of Transportation is passing along $1.3 million in overruns for the project, which created a recreational path from near the intersection of Syndicate Road and North Street (Route 7) east to the Spruces Park on Main Street (Route 2).  Updated at 2:30 p.m. with information from the police report. WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Main Street bridge across the Green River was briefly closed to traffic on Tuesday morning after a single-vehicle accident left a car on its roof in the westbound lane. Officials at the scene said that the driver of the car was conscious and alert when taken from the scene by ambulance. The driver was the only occupant of the vehicle. Williamstown Police Tuesday afternoon identified the driver as Patricia Margaret Cumberbatch of Luce Road.
