Clark Art Outdoor Concert by Lakou Mizik

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — On Wednesday, July 24, the Clark Art Institute concludes its July Outdoor Concert Series with a performance by Lakou Mizik.    This year, the July Outdoor Concert Series celebrates the French Caribbean with some musicians from Guadeloupe and Haiti. The free concert takes place at 6 pm on the Clark's Reflecting Pool Lawn.   According to a press release:   Lakou Mizik is a multigenerational collective of Haitian musicians united in a mission to spread awareness about traditional Haitian culture. Mount Greylock School District Adopts No-Cell Phone Policy

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Mount Greylock Regional School Committee on Thursday voted to ban cell phones and other "student-owned technology devices" in the district's three schools starting in September.   The committee responded quickly to enact a new district-wide policy after former Superintendent Jason McCandless this spring requested the change for the elementary schools and middle high schools.   The policy created with input from administrators, the buildings' School Councils and the Student Council at Mount Greylock prohibits students from having personal electronic devices in their possession from the start of classes in the morning until the final

The pieces reflect the broad range of artistic, utilitarian and decorative glassworks over cultures and time, such as Josh Simpson's 'Megaworld.' Williamstown Zoning Board Considers Art Museum Plan

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Zoning Board of Appeals on Thursday began its review of the development plan for a new Williams College Museum of Art at the junction of Routes 2 and 7.   College attorney Jamie Art, museum Director Pamela Franks and members of the design team went before the board to talk about the project to replace the current museum housed in Lawrence Hall on Main Street.   The college hopes to break ground on the new museum in September with a completion date in the summer of 2027.   First it needs a couple of approvals from town boards: the Planning Board, which will determine that the new museum has appropriate parking and the ZBA, which needs to grant a

Williamstown Housing Trust Seeks to Resolve Habitat Project Issue

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The board of the town's Affordable Housing Trust on Wednesday agreed in principle to a plan to address an issue that has been a sticking point for a proposed subdivision on Summer Street.   The AHT has been working with Northern Berkshire Habitat for Humanity to develop a 1.75-acre parcel with four houses and an access road.   Part of the plan Habitat developed with civil engineer Guntlow and Associates is a rain garden that would be part of the subdivision's stormwater management plan.   Among the issues raised by critics of the subdivision is the question of who ultimately would be responsible for maintaining the rain garden. Williamstown Abutters Appeal Decision on Habitat for Humanity Project

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — One of the Summer Street residents who has objected publicly to a proposed subdivision on the street has appealed the Conservation Commission's decision to allow the project to go forward.   Jeffrey Parkman of 33 Summer St. filed an appeal to the state Department of Environmental Protection of a June 13 Con Comm vote to order conditions for the construction of a 260-foot road and, eventually, four single-family homes on a 1.75-acre lot purchased by the town's Affordable Housing Trust in 2015.   The Affordable Housing Trust has partnered with Northern Berkshire Habitat for Humanity on a plan to use the site for four homes that will be affordable

BCArc’s Golf Event Raises Funds for Individuals with Disabilities

You only need a glance outside to see a problem all too familiar to Berkshire county: closing businesses, a shrinking population, and a stunning lack of regional investment.

But 70 years ago, this wasn't an issue. On the North Adams-Boston passenger rail line before the '60s, Berkshires residents could easily go to Boston and back in a day, and the region benefited from economic influx. But as cars supplanted trains, the Northern Tier was terminated, and now only freight trains regularly use the line.
